Art Deco engagement rings are praised for their timeless elegance, stunning sparkle and classic allure. Their intricate designs feel as fresh and contemporary now as they did almost a century ago.

But these rings are not only gorgeous, they also have a story to tell.

A story which starts in the 1920s when the Art Deco era was roaring in western Europe and began developing into a major style in the United States as well.

The Art Deco era (from 1915s to the 1930s) had a significant influence on every major area of design - from architecture and furniture to graphics and jewelry.

In this article, I wanted to share a few interesting details about Art Deco engagement rings, focusing on the gemstones and metalscommonly used to create them.

After all, what better way to tell their story, right?

Metals

Historically placed between the two world wars, the Art Deco era was an effervescent time filled with excitement, extravagance and newfound freedom. Opulent parties, champagne, smoky jazz clubs and sparkling dresses were very much a part of the "roaring 20s".

This mood marked a fascinating shift in jewelry as well.

Platinum, 18k and 14k white gold and sterling silver white gold were the favored metals used to create Art Deco rings which matched the exuberance and glamour of those years.

This choice of metals gave the rings a cool, modern sheen that captured the opulence and elegance which characterized the era.

Yellow gold lost its status as a top pick, which was considered to be a premiere at that time.

Gemstones

Art deco was all about glitz and glamour, and more was always better.

Vibrant-colored gemstones were prominently featured in the rings of the times. These bright colors in eye-catching, contrasting combinations gave the rings their dazzling sparkle.

Here are some of the types of stones commonly found in vintage Art Deco engagement rings:

  • sapphires
  • green emeralds
  • turquoise
  • coral
  • ruby
  • jade
  • black onyx.

As far as design goes, most commonly, a standout gemstone was placed in the middle of the ring. However, in true Art Deco fashion, the beauty of the center stone was complemented by a selection of smaller gemstones which came together to create an explosion of sparkle.

Diamonds were also regularly featured in the engagement rings of the day to showcase the luxurious lifestyle of the 20s.

Another aspect worth mentioning is that Art Deco echoed the relative novelty and mass usage of machine-age technology. The advancement of technology allowed jewelry manufactures to cut gemstones into modern shapes such as baguettes, triangle cuts and emerald cuts.
